Scrapbooking Trend Watch: Banners

A few months ago I bought these cute socks at Target on clearance.  They were 70 cents!

While at the 2010 Close to My Heart convention earlier this month, instructor Katy Donaldson explained that we can get design inspiration from everyday things like magazines and even socks.  Imagine my surprise when she brought out this example:

The adorable card pictured above features the Over the Rainbow stamp set which I had previously overlooked, but will now become a part of my collection!

Socks aside, note the trend here–banners.  They are everywhere. Check out the following…

This signage was designed by CTMH Consultant Bren Yule and features the new Magnifique paper collection available Autumn 2010.

Here’s another one designed by CTMH consultant Christine David and features the new Hooligans paper collection available Autumn 2010.

And here’s a layout from Bren.  I like how she’s mixed patterned papers from Passages (script), Splendor (blue houndstooth) and Jingle (banner).

Banners don’t have to be triangles.  I’ve seen them made with circles and rectangles as well.

You can make your own banners with stamps, like the new Party Pennants stamp set coming in Autumn 2010 (I keep teasing you guys with the new stuff, don’t I?).

You can handcut your banners if you’re good at cutting shapes.  You can also use a punch, although triangle punches are hard to come by.  I found one at the Great American Scrapbook Convention in a clearance bin for $5.  I used it to make this:

This pocket invitation gives you a sneak peak at Zippidee, the August 2010 Kit of the Month (papers, star, buttons, Good Times and arrow stamps).  The invite stamp is from the Party Invitation stamp set.  The card pattern is “Aubrey’s Invitation” from the Originals Card Confidence Program Book.

Update: This article from Jeanette Lynton’s “Color Me Monday” blog also features ideas for banners.

What do you think of the banner trend?  Have you been using them on your projects?

Update (8/30/10) - Check out Jeanette Lynton’s “Color Me Monday” post on pennants (banners).

Cute socks, I always find the cutest socks for a $1 at Target. I haven’t used banners yet because I wasn’t sure how to incorporate them. But, these are some really cute ideas. Thanks.

I was pleasantly surprised by Target’s sock collection. Lots of cute styles for a great price. I didn’t even think about using the socks for scrapbook inspiration. Glad these tips were helpful!
